In the 1990s, the work of artists Maik and Dirk Löbbert, who live [and work] in Cologne, became internationally known for its subversive intervention. Their works consists of the most minimal changes, hardly noticeable interferences, visible perhaps only on a second glance.
These site-specific interventions are the result of an intense exploration and careful analysis of the actual conditions of the respective situation in order to filter out its specificity and characteristics. To achieve their interventions the two artists primarily apply materials and elements that are typical of the individual place and which establish its peculiarity, thereby creating an inseparable unity between the artwork and its context in which the difference between the existing and the created is nullified and the polarity of the art and reality is lead to a state of symbiosis: The context becomes the content of the work and the work becomes an element of that context.
For Marion Scharmann’s gallery Maik and Dirk Löbbert developed a site-specific work that explores both the existing architectural situation and the relationship between art and the market.
